Should I drill through metal drywall supports?

I’m new to DIY, and fitting closet shelving. I’m supposed to drill holes in the drywall to fit some plastic shelf mounts, but two of my holes have hit metal. I’m wondering whether I can drill through this metal without damaging the integrity of the wall, and if so, whether I need a special drill bit to do so.

If you have metal framing in the construction of your house and these members go vertically then that would be a stud and can be drilled with a regular drill or better yet is to use a metal screw through the drywall and into the stud for attachment of brackets.
